As an aesthetician, one of the most common questions I am asked by clients is how frequently they should be receiving facials and what is the importance of receiving facials on a regular basis. A professional facial serves many important purposes for our skin’s health. Aestheticians are well educated and trained to identify a client’s skin care needs through a thorough skin analysis. These needs can change based on the season, environmental exposures, stress, fluctuations of hormones, diet, lifestyle, at-home product use, as well as an array of other factors. As these factors may shift, so do the needs of your skin. An experienced aesthetician can target those concerns and customize your facial accordingly.
In addition to skin analysis, professional exfoliation with the use of enzymes, acids or microdermabrasion removes dead cells from the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of our skin), which accumulate as our skin surfaces cycle approximately every 28 days. This surfacing of cells leads to dullness, rough texture and can impede product penetration. When these dead cells are properly removed according to your skin type and condition, you will be left with a healthy, balanced glow and will maximize the benefits of what you use in your at-home skin care regimen, thus increasing their results.
Targeted products and ingredients are used throughout your facial procedure. These cocktails of ingredients are often more potent than what is used at home and are administered in a way to maximize results while minimizing damage or irritation. Unfortunately, with so many options on the market today, it is not uncommon to see clients who have damaged their skin’s barrier with overuse of harsh acids and scrubs or ingredients that are not compatible with their skin’s needs. Barrier function is the most crucial aspect to skin health and a good aesthetician will understand how to heal and protect your skin while also treating it with effective, active ingredients
My personal goal is to assist my clients to the point where they do NOT have to come in for a facial every four weeks (that is, unless you can’t resist the monthly pampering!). I strive to actively work on the issues that bring clients into my treatment room and to focus on skin correction and repair through a series of monthly treatments until we reach the point that their facials can be done less frequently, often based on change of seasons or special life events. I work with my clients to get them on the proper home care routines and techniques, which is absolutely crucial to seeing results. After all, what is the point of receiving results-driven facials if your products do not benefit, and in fact negate, all the work we have done together?
Maintaining regular facials is a necessary component for your skin’s wellness. Whether you are receiving them in conjunction with another service offered at Hillelson-Whipple Clinic or as part of your regular routine for maintenance, you are guaranteed to see an improvement in your skin’s radiance and softness with the proper care and nurturing in our treatment room.
