All You Need to Know About VoluDermThe world of medical science is growing faster and faster every day, with new ways to achieve the same basic beauty and anti-aging goals. With the introduction of the revolutionary VoluDerm Technology, the game has changed again. Say goodbye to the many other ways you’ve been rejuvenating your skin; VoluDerm can do it all, while also offering a few extra benefits, too. Now that VoluDerm is available for treatments at American Self Plastic Surgery and Orthapaedics, here’s what you need to know about what it can do for you.

About VoluDerm Technology

VoluDerm’s cutting-edge technology offers patients a way to achieve optimal facial dermal volumizing with only minimal discomfort. It has been clinically proven to significantly reduce many of the signs of aging while also rejuvenating the skin itself.

VoluDerm uses fine micro-pins to conduct radio frequency into the skin’s dermal layer, which stimulates the body to produce hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. These essential elements enable to skin to renew itself, leaving it firmer and plumper as a result. Wrinkles are reduced, the skin is resurfaced, and the volumizing effects are long-lasting following a VoluDerm treatment.

While there are other fractional treatments that use a similar approach, VoluDerm is different because of this unique post-treatment response from the skin. There is no interruption to your daily lifestyle when you stop in for a VoluDerm treatment, because the epidermis responds only mildly to the micro-pins and radio frequency. Rejuvenate your skin around your busy schedule with VoluDerm.

Good Candidates for VoluDerm Treatments

Given its gentle nature, the VoluDerm treatment is a good option for most patients. It has been proven effective on all skin types and only causes minimal discomfort as the skin heals. Candidates for VoluDerm treatments should have visible aging concerns on their skin as well as a desire to rejuvenate the skin’s surface and appearance. If you’re considering VoluDerm treatments, meet with Dr. Hillelson to discuss your medical history and any concerns you may have. Only a professional can decide if you’re a good candidate for treatment, but VoluDerm can be a good choice for even the most sensitive cases.

What VoluDerm Can Treat

With aging, many patients experience significant changes to the skin and face. A history of acne, sun damage, and other environmental hazards can lead to many types of damage. As we age, the breakdown of collagen and elastin leads to loosened skin, plus lines and wrinkles. VoluDerm technology can provide effective relief from common concerns including:

  • Loss of volume or plumpness in the skin
  • Appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Presence of acne scars
  • Surface imperfections
  • Skin texture irregularities
  • Sensitive skin concerns

VoluDerm is an appropriate treatment for the skin on your face, hands, and upper chest as well. If you’re looking for an effective treatment to reverse the damage of time, gravity, and other factors, then it’s time to consider a revolutionary new technology to help you.

Key Benefits of the VoluDerm Procedure

So why should you consider VoluDerm when it’s time for a skin resurfacing treatment? There are so many reasons. First of all, it’s so much more than just a way to resurface the skin. It will also reduce wrinkles, plump the skin, and address scars and other impurities in the skin. VoluDerm is a smooth and painless procedure that makes incredible changes to the skin without leaving you to recuperate later. Don’t waste time recovering and get back to your life as usual with a VoluDerm treatment. Not to mention, it’s so gentle that almost anyone is a candidate.

Five Benefits of Medical MicrodermabrasionToday, there are many clinical skincare treatments that can benefit the skin, each in a unique way. Medical microdermabrasion is one of these treatments, which can greatly improve the appearance, texture, and tone of the skin through specially designed techniques. For the right patient, a medical microdermabrasion can offer many benefits and incredible results. Learn more about this skin treatment and how it could improve the look and feel of your own skin.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Before you can understand its benefits, it’s important to have a good idea about the microdermabrasion process itself. The treatment lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and can be performed in a clinician’s office without anesthesia or numbing agents. After the skin has been cleaned and prepped, a handheld, diamond-tipped tool is moved slowly over the surface of the face to gently exfoliate the skin. The device is then used to vacuum away the dead skin cells and dirt loosened by the abrasion. Patients are able to return to their daily schedule without pain or the need for recovery.

Benefit #1 – Microdermabrasion Is Nonsurgical

While many of today’s rejuvenation procedures are surgical in nature, microdermabrasion offers a quick, last-minute way to give yourself a youthful boost without the hassle, risks, and recovery time of surgery. There is very little preparation required before a microdermabrasion and nothing to do afterwards. The aesthetician will likely recommend maintaining a good skin care regimen following your microdermabrasion, which helps results last. When compared to the lengthy recoveries of surgery, however, that sounds like a breeze!

Benefit #2 – Microdermabrasion Has Very Few Risks

Given the gentle nature of its approach, it’s not surprising that microdermabrasion would not carry any major risks for patients. Aside from a slight chance of permanent pigmentation in patients with dark skin tones, there are no potential complications at all. Most patients can expect to see some slight redness of the skin following a microdermabrasion treatment, but this is normal. The redness is the result of the abrasive diamond tip and it is a sign that the new skin is healing. If you’re concerned about any skin conditions you have or other medical problems, consult with a licensed physician before your microdermabrasion to see if this is a smart choice for you.

Benefit #3 – Microdermabrasion Reveals a Youthful You

During a microdermabrasion treatment, the cutting-edge technology of the diamond-tip device does something pretty amazing. While it’s breaking apart the dead skin cell layers on the top of the face, it’s exposing the healthy, new skin cells beneath them for the first time. These bright, youthful cells are encouraged to heal and grow after your procedure, leaving you with a natural glow that makes your skin look new again. It is less aggressive than other skin treatments, which means less damage to your skin and quicker healing for these new cells. The result of your microdermabrasion treatment is an improved texture and tone of your skin, with a healthy and radiant complexion to go with it.

Benefit #4 – Microdermabrasion Addresses Many Skin Concerns

If you’re wondering whether your specific skin concerns can be addressed by microdermabrasion treatments, the answer is likely a resounding yes. Because microdermabrasion works to remove the old, dead skin layers, it often takes away many of the problems patients have with their skin. Every microdermabrasion treatment can help to reduce the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles, like crow’s feet
  • Skin blotchiness or uneven tone
  • Rough, dry, or flaky skin
  • Acne scars, sun damage, age spots, and other hyper-pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks

Microdermabrasion offers patients the chance to work toward a fresh start, a chance to erase the damage that has been done to their faces over their lifetimes. From the acne of your youth to the wrinkles of your later life, it’s nice to know that one treatment can truly cover all of your skincare concerns!

Benefit #5 – Microdermabrasion Can Be Part of Your Skincare Routine

Microdermabrasion is a safe and gentle solution for many common skin care problems faced by men and women of all ages. It is also a treatment that can be repeated as needed for many years as part of a regular skincare routine. When you first seek microdermabrasion treatments, you may be encouraged to plan for multiple visits spread out over time as a way to safely scale back your visible spots, wrinkles, or other concerns. Once you’ve achieved the skin tone and texture you desire, work with your aesthetician to create a regular maintenance plan to help you keep up with those results. There is no danger associated with multiple microdermabrasion treatments, provided you space them out far enough so your skin has the time to heal.

Take Control of Your Skin With Microdermabrasion

To make arrangements for your own microdermabrasion treatments, you’ll need to connect with a clinic that offers top-notch service and the latest technology in skincaretreatments. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ruth Hillelson, Director of Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics at American Self, to get started. She has an extensive background in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, as well as a commitment to implementing the latest medical techniques and technologies.

Dr. Terry Whipple is the Director of Orthopaedics and Fitness at American Self, providing his patients with a range of other procedural options to help with fitness, pain management, and other health concerns. With both Dr. Hillelson and Dr. Whipple involved, American Self is a unique clinic for patients seeking procedures and treatments of all varieties. Dr. Terry L. Whipple and the ACFEIHere at American Self, Dr. Terry L. Whipple serves as the Director of Orthopaedics. Dr. Whipple has been practicing in Richmond, Virginia, since 1979, and has widely published on topics in the orthopaedic surgery field, gaining international renown for his work. Now, Dr. Whipple will take on another role as a newly elected member of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute (ACFEI).

All About Dr. Whipple

Previous to this honor, Dr. Whipple attended Princeton University as an International Law and Organizations major and graduated with honors. He then attended the University of Virginia to receive his medical degree before completing a two-year residency in general surgery at Baylor University Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Whipple served as a general medical flight surgeon in the US Navy and then performed a second residency, this time in orthopaedic surgery at Duke University.

In addition to his position as the Director of Orthopaedics and Fitness at American Self, Dr. Whipple also serves as a member of the Board of Editors for six professional journals. He has edited and authored four orthopaedic textbooks to date and currently holds thirteen patents on unique surgical instruments and implants. Dr. Whipple is also a member of twenty-five professional organizations.

What Dr. Whipple Brings to ACFEI

As a member of the ACFEI, Dr. Whipple gains significant credentials for evaluating injuries when litigation is involved. His specialized credentials will be put to good use in the analysis of any injuries sustained during an accident, a workplace incident, a sporting event, or due to certain retail products. ACFEI membership qualifies Dr. Whipple to provide diagnostic expertise when it is necessary to determine the cause of an injury. In electing him to membership, ACFEI has acknowledged Dr. Whipple’s outstanding proficiency in understanding neuro-musclo-skeletal science and the preferred medical treatments for various injuries.

All AboutForensic Examiners and the ACFEI

Dr. Whipple’s new role as a forensic examiner means that he has been recognized as a specialized professional who can provide an analysis, investigation, inquiry, inspection, or examination in an effort to obtain the truth. Forensic examiners are often called upon for their “expert opinion” in court when their specialty field can be used to determine the outcome of a litigation. While only a judge can qualify a professional as an expert in any given field, membership to the ACFEI is the first step toward providing this type of assistance in a legal case.

The American College of Forensic Examiners Institute represents forensic examiners like Dr. Whipple on a global scale. They are an independent, scientific and professional association who serve to promote the sharing of forensic information as well as the continued advancement of the field of forensic examination. ACFEI represents forensic examiners in many disciplines from accounting to toxicology. Dr. Whipple joins as a specialist in the ACFEI Medical division, joining a team of other professionals chosen for their high standards in education, outstanding credentials and advanced training.

The staff of American Self is proud to announce Dr. Whipple’s latest achievement and support his new endeavors as a forensic examiner. Of course, Dr. Whipple will continue to remain available to his regular patients, newcomers and prospective patients at his practice.

Get big results with ThermageYou may not have heard of Thermage yet, but this revolutionary skin care treatment is making big changes to the way skin is treated. This unique treatment is designed to target sagging, loose skin and tighten it without using surgery. There are many benefits to this incredible new way to improve the look of tired, aging skin. Read on to learn more about what Thermage treatments can offer you.

No. 1 Thermage Is Nonsurgical and Effective

Presently, many facial rejuvenation techniques are surgical in nature. They usually involve the placement of incisions to lift the skin, lay it more tightly, and trim away the excess. Weeks of recovery time tend to follow such procedures and even then, the results aren’t permanent. Aging, time and gravity will continue to affect the skin and deteriorate its natural elasticity. The cycle of sagging skin will continue, no matter how many surgeries are performed.

Thermage, on the other hand, is a nonsurgical approach that involves little downtime and can have long-lasting results. Basically, Thermage works by using radiofrequency waves to improve the skin’s appearance and boost elasticity. There are no incisions, no skin is trimmed away, and there is no lengthy recovery to suffer through.

No. 2 Thermage Needs No Downtime

There is recovery involved with nearly every procedure available today, but Thermage is one of the few that doesn’t require downtime. There’s no need to plan time off from work, postpone a vacation, or skip out on the company baseball game. Your Thermage treatments are designed to fit into your daily routine so you can see your surgeon and return to the rest of your day without missing a beat. While you may experience slight discomfort after the procedure, it won’t be enough to slow you down.

No. 3 Thermage Is Versatile

Facial surgeries have very specific purposes, but Thermage can treat any area of the face with the same approach and garner the same results. Patients with loosening skin can opt for Thermage treatments to address concerns they have for:

  • The eyes. Thermage is safe for this delicate area of the face and can address hooded eyes, fine lines or crow’s feet, frown lines, and the upper and lower eyelid.
  • The face. With Thermage, surgeons can target any area where the skin appears to be sagging, including the neck, jowls, and more. Gravity may pull inelastic skin downwards, but Thermage is the perfect tool for reversing this damage.
  • The body. While we’re concentrating on the face, the body begins to age as well. Sagging skin can form in various places on the body, like the arms and thighs. Thermage will smooth this skin, sometimes even improving the appearance of cellulite temporarily.

No. 4 Thermage Requires Just One Treatment

Some of today’s technology-based procedures involve two or more sessions to achieve real, lasting results. With Thermage, just one treatment is enough to get the results you need. While you may need to treat multiple areas on separate days, it is your choice whether you boost your Thermage treatment with another on the same area.

So how does Thermage work? This unique procedure uses the latest Thermage CPT technology to deliver radiofrequencies to the skin, adding a gentle vibrating sensation and periodic bursts of cooling to provide comfort for patients. The treatment is gentle as it alternates between heating and cooling the area with each pulse of the device. During the procedure, your surgeon will check in on your comfort level to ensure that you have a pleasant, but effective, treatment experience.

No. 5 Thermage Results Appear In One Day

With no recovery time and no lengthy period of swelling or bruising to get through, Thermage is already a very unique skincare treatment. On top of these great benefits, Thermage also offers its patients the ability to get their results quickly, sometimes in as little as one day. Your first results will appear almost instantly, with slight changes evolving for six months following your treatment as the body regenerates collagen and the skin tightens. These deeper results will last for years as the body naturally produces what it needs to keep your skin looking great.

Belotero is a new nonsurgical skincare treatmentIf you’ve been looking for a nonsurgical, anti-aging treatment option for your skin, the newly FDA-approved Belotero Balance may be the perfect option for you. Like many dermal fillers, it offers a wide range of benefits for its patients without any major risks or complications. Learn more about this noninvasive option to discover if Belotero cosmetic treatments are the right fit for your needs.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

If you’re new to the idea of dermal filler injections, understanding how they work is key to understanding Belotero. Sometimes called “liquid facelifts” or nonsurgical facelifts, dermal fillers offer many anti-aging benefits without any of the downtime of surgery. They are soft tissue fillers that can add volume to specific areas of the face, enhance the lips and contours of the face, soften facial creases and wrinkles, and restore youthfulness to your face.

Dermal fillers can be comprised of different chemical compounds or biocompatible formats, so your surgeon will help you to choose the right one for you. When planning your dermal injection, you may also consider combining the treatment with other skin rejuvenation treatments or procedures.

What Is Belotero Balance?

One of the latest additions to the dermal filler ranks is Belotero Balance, a unique filler that has been specially designed to integrate into your skin for the most natural effect. Belotero won’t just fill the contours, it will mold to your facial contours and adapt to your skin’s individuality. This dermal filler is made of the biocompatible material hyaluronic acid, or HA, which is a sugar molecule that exists in human skin. This protein will bind to water, filling in wrinkles and folds.

Belotero Balance should always be administered through an injection by a board certified plastic surgeon or a board certified dermatologist. A topical anesthetic and an antibacterial agent are typically used before the injection is performed. The actual injection may feel like a small pinch or bug bite and takes only seconds. Following the procedure, you may experience some redness or swelling at the treatment site, but there is no need for lengthy recovery times or restrictions to your daily activities. The risks associated with Belotero injections are rare, including infection, extended swelling, and a reaction to the anesthetic.

Your results from Belotero will be only temporary, typically lasting for about six to 12 months depending on many factors. It cannot be used to treat excess sagging skin and cannot stop the aging process. Yet, for a fast, effective, and virtually painless procedure, Belotero dermal fillers are an excellent option for anti-aging concerns.

What Concerns Will Belotero Address?

Speaking of aging concerns, Belotero has a long list of areas that it can treat and problems that it can solve. Nearly every area of the face is a potential treatment area for Belotero based on your unique signs of aging. Consider Belotero for the treatment of these common problem spots:

  • Frown lines that form between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines, or worry lines
  • Crow’s feet that form at the corners of the eyes
  • Lines across the bridge of the nose
  • Cheekbone depressions
  • Smile lines, known as nasolabial folds, that form between the nose and mouth
  • Lines that form around the mouth and lips, or perioral lines
  • Loss of the lip border, called vermillion border demarcation
  • Laugh lines or marionette lines that form around the mouth and chin
  • Back of the hands
  • Neck and shoulder wrinkles
  • Acne scars

Who Is a Candidate for Belotero Injections?

Like candidates for other dermal fillers, would-be patients of Belotero Balance should be in good overall health and not smoke. They should have a clear vision of the results they would like to achieve with their Belotero procedure, such as enhanced lips, fuller cheeks, or diminished forehead lines. Because dermal filler treatments don’t require downtime, there is no need for extensive planning ahead of time. Procedures can be performed on a lunch break without interrupting your daily schedule. Work with your plastic surgeon to plan the procedure that works best for you, whether it includes additional treatments for a complete facial rejuvenation or just Belotero itself.

BBL by dr. hillelsonThe Sciton BBL treatment system, available at American Self, addresses different types of skin conditions with safety, efficiency, and comfort. Featured on popular television shows, including The Doctors and The Dr. Oz Show, the Sciton BBL laser can be customized to deliver the outcomes you desire.

Many of the common skin concerns addressed by this treatment include age spots, sun damage, wrinkles and fine lines, dilated veins, and scarring. At American Self, Ruth Hillelson, MD, FACS has vast experience using Sciton BBL to treat skin discoloration and aging issues.

There are several types of Sciton BBL treatments to choose from, but each of them promises to help you stay Forever Beautiful.

Forever Brite BBL Treatments

Among the varieties of Sciton BBL treatments, Forever Brite is a true innovator that has set the new industry standard for the treatment of skin conditions. Forever Brite is an ideal choice for aging concerns, skin conditions associated with an active lifestyle, and sun damage in varying degrees.

When you choose a Forever Brite BBL Treatment, your exact approach will be tailored for you to help achieve your desired results on any part of the body.

Typically, patients request this Sciton BBL treatment to deal with sun damage on the body parts most often exposed to sunlight: the face, neck, back of the hands, chest, and shoulders. Consult with Dr. Hillelson to discover the best approach for your treatment.

Forever Young BBL Skin Rejuvenation

When your skin can really use a boost, Forever Young BBL may be the treatment to help rejuvenate your look.

It’s not just your looks that get the boost, either. Forever Young BBL is the only device that has been proven to change the gene expression of aging, longevity, and a longer lifespan.

This revolutionary treatment is able to functionally rejuvenate the skin, delaying the aging of your skin and creating clearer, smooth skin that looks much younger. The two-step process of Forever Young BBL begins with a Forever Brite treatment and then adds on other components to target skin wrinkling and laxity.

This nonsurgical alternative to other anti-aging procedures can generate dramatic results without downtime and discomfort.

Forever Tyte BBL Skin Tightening or SkinTyte

The aging process causes many unwanted side effects, including the lost elasticity of the skin. When the skin’s base foundation, or dermal matrix, begins to loosen, the elastin and collagen of the skin breaks down and gets stretched out.

These two essential elements of the skin also slow in production, which only adds to the skin’s laxity over time. With Forever Tyte BBL, infrared thermal energy is used to target and heat the collagen in the dermis.

Doing so stimulates the body’s healing response and the cells can heal themselves, renewing collagen and tightening the dermal matrix. Combined with powerful cooling to maintain the outer surface of your skin, Forever Tyte BBL is a carefully designed and highly effective treatment that is completely comfortable and safe for each patient.

Laser Resurfacing Will Improve the Look of Your SkinWith so many surgical and nonsurgical treatments designed to resurface the skin, choosing the one that’s right for you can be a challenge.

In some cases, technological advances can improve the technique to help your surgeon achieve a new level of success. Laser skin rejuvenation is one of the most cutting-edge procedures for reducing wrinkles and other skin irregularities. A popular choice for those seeking skin rejuvenation, laser skin resurfacing may be the right treatment you need to improve your own visible skin concerns.

About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing, a unique technology-based skin treatment, is primarily used to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections on the face. During this procedure, recently developed laser technologies are used by today’s plastic surgeons for a much higher level of precision and intensity.

Laser skin resurfacing is based on the use of light beams, which are delivered directly to the skin’s trouble spots in short, concentrated bursts. These beams will remove damaged skin cells in an exacting manner, layer by layer until the desired depth is achieved. Many common minor flaws can be eliminated permanently by this procedure, including fine lines, wrinkles, scars from acne and chickenpox, surgically damaged skin, age spots, sun damaged skin, liver spots, discoloration, warts, birthmarks, and also enlarged oil glands surrounding the nose.

Two Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing

American Self Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedics offers both tissue destructive (Sciton) and non-tissue destructive (Clear + Brilliant Permea) treatments to patients. The Sciton tissue destructive therapy uses a laser beam at 2940 nm wavelength, delivered through a computer-controlled device to treat either the full surface of the face or fractional areas where damage is present. For either procedure, the laser beam scans and removes the top layer of the skin. The body will then replace this layer with healthy skin, with all surface damage gone for good. Tissue destructive treatments can range from shallow to much deeper depths for problems that are harder to eliminate.

The Clear + Brilliant Permea non-tissue destructive treatment uses an advanced technology to directly treat the targeted areas of the face. It uses the patented Intelligent Optical Tracking System and a special handpiece to deliver the treatment, which is gentle but effective. The procedure is then followed by a topical antioxidant serum to create better tone, vibrancy, and overall appearance.

The Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Because of the unique approach it uses to correct skin flaws, laser skin resurfacing reduces the risks of unwanted side effects. Hyperpigmentation, for example, is a common problem after acne scars are removed; laser skin resurfacing does not involve bleaching or other pigmentation adjustments, so patients will not see changes in skin color.

The laser skin resurfacing approach offers another benefit as well. While it may seem harsh to remove skin layers from the face, the process is quite healthy for the skin in general. Removing dead skin cells from the surface allows the healthy cells below to thrive and grow. Many skin rejuvenating procedures use methods to remove these skin cells, but laser skin resurfacing can do more than just remove them. As the laser works to remove the outer layers of the skin, the powerful beams of light will also warm and stimulate the cells beneath. This encourages the dermis to produce new collagen, helping it to become firm, smooth, and more youthful. Eventually, this skin will be the newly refreshed outer layer of skin.

Before Choosing Laser Skin Resurfacing

If you’re considering laser skin resurfacing to improve the appearance of your skin and eliminate imperfections, you should think about a few different things before you sit down to consult with a plastic surgeon. To be prepared for your meeting, think about your skin type or what you believe it is, as well as the primary reason that you are seeking laser skin resurfacing. Many patients choose this treatment to look younger, achieve smoother skin, or to eradicate an old scar, for example. Your doctor will use this information to determine the treatment and laser type most suitable for your skin type and your needs. Before planning your surgery, you should consider whether you will be able to dedicate proper recovery time following your procedure. You may need more than one treatment, which your doctor will discuss with you as well.

At the time of your consultation, expect the discussion to include information on full coverage and fractional approaches, the amount of treatments you may need and how much downtime, and what results you can expect for yourself. Once you’ve decided to receive laser skin resurfacing treatments, planning for your procedure will be quick and easy, thanks to the guidance of your plastic surgeon.

treating your wrinklesDuring the past decade, Botox has established itself as a leader in the injectable treatments industry. Still, despite being a household name, many prospective patients don’t know just how well this revolutionary treatment can fight back against the signs of aging. For those who are frustrated with fine lines and wrinkles, Botox could offer the results you’ve been wanting.

All About Botox

Botox Cosmetic is the brand name everyone knows, but the product itself is called Botulinum Toxin Type A. This is a purified neurotoxin, specifically produced by a bacterium known as clostridium botulinum. While the term neurotoxin may have you on edge, Botox is simply, safe, and direct in its approach to treating wrinkles.

When the product is injected into the muscles beneath the treatment area, it works to block nerve impulse transmissions, relaxing the muscles. When the muscles aren’t able to contract, the creases and wrinkles of the face are smoothed. New lines cannot form, either. Botox has been approved by the FDA for over ten years to treat the signs of aging in this manner.

What Botox Treats

Given how this formula works, the best areas to treat with Botox are those where lines and wrinkles have been caused or deepened by the movement of nearby facial muscles. By temporarily paralyzing these muscles, Botox allows the skin of the treatment area to smooth.

When delivered in small doses by a licensed medical professional, Botox can help to reduce the signs of aging at the corners of the eyes, across the forehead, and even in the neck. Another popular treatment spot for Botox is the space between the eyebrows, where Glabellar lines can form and create an angry look to a person’s face.

Everyday facial expressions like frowning and smiling, as well as laughing, can create and exaggerate these unwanted creases over time. With Botox, the damage can be lessened and somewhat controlled moving forward.

How Long Botox Lasts

Because Botox is not a permanent change to the face, many patients are more comfortable trying it to see how well it can work for them. Botox creates a paralyzing effect that is not permanent at all; eventually, all feeling and movement will return to the treatment area muscles.

Typically, the effects of the injection will last three to four months. For those who enjoy the effects of the procedure, it can be repeated at regular intervals to maintain your results without any lag time in between.

Its temporary nature makes Botox a great option for patients who aren’t ready for a facelift or other anti-aging surgery but who would still like to see results. Botox can also be used as a touch-up in the years following facial rejuvenation surgery, if so desired.

Good Candidates for Botox Treatments

If you’re considering Botox, you should first be experiencing the signs of aging and have a desire to minimize these lines and wrinkles. If your wrinkles are mostly dynamic in nature, meaning they have formed and deepened directly because of muscle movements, you will see the best results with a Botox injection over another treatment. Deep frown and smile lines are particularly responsive to Botox.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to wait to be a certain age before you are eligible for Botox injections. Lines and wrinkles aren’t strictly formed by the aging process. Sometimes heredity itself can cause the formation of lines, folds, and creases to appear at relatively young ages.

To know if your specific concerns are treatable by Botox, consult with a plastic surgeon or aesthetician. Bear in mind that women who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or who may become pregnant should not receive Botox injections without a medical consultation.

The Botox Treatment

Botox Cosmetic is delivered to the treatment area directly via injection. It is a straightforward procedure that takes about 10 minute to perform. For some patients, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the area, but no sedation or incisions are required for Botox treatments.

It is a noninvasive, nonsurgical procedure that involves only the slight pinch of a needle. Many patients describe this sensation as being similar to a bug bite. You may have more than one injection if you are having multiple areas treated. Only a small amount of Botox is injected into the target area, right where it is most needed.

It is common to experience some slight side effects in the days following your injection. To help alleviate any swelling or discomfort, an ice pack may be applied before and after your treatment. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities right away without missing a beat. Results will begin to show right away, developing in the first few days after your injection and lasting up to six months.

The Risks of Botox Injections

By now, most people are acclimated to the list of potential side effects and risks that follow any drug treatment, medical treatment, or surgery. Botox, however, doesn’t have much of a risk list to speak of, thanks to an excellent safety record and the high patient satisfaction rankings it receives.

In fact, its patient rankings make Botox one of the top cosmetic procedures available today. Some patients may experience an allergic reaction to Botox, so it’s important to discuss your known allergies and medical history with your physician before treatment. Doing so can help you minimize any risks you may have.

Find the Right Place for Botox Treatments

The success of any cosmetic procedure begins with finding the right plastic surgeon to perform it. For your Botox injections, consult with an experienced, credentialed plastic surgeon.

Contact American Self Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedics to book your appointment with the Medi-Spa clinicians. For other treatments and surgical procedures, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ruth Hillelson, Director of Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics.

She has an extensive background in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, as well as a commitment to implementing the latest medical techniques and technologies. CoolSculpting is one nonsurgical technology offered at American Self that can help patients achieve their ideal body contour.

Dr. Terry Whipple is the Director of Orthopaedics providing his patients with a range of other procedural options to help with fitness, pain management, and other health concerns. When it comes to pampering yourself, there are many techniques that can soothe, hydrate, and rejuvenate your skin. A wide range of skin care treatments can offer tremendous benefits to the face by renewing and cleansing the skin. Each of these procedures is nonsurgical and noninvasive, delivering real results without a long recovery period. If you’re looking for a way to revive your skin, combat specific skin concerns, or just indulge yourself with a worthwhile treatment, there is a skin care treatment right for you. Read on to decide which one best suits your needs.

What Is Medical Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a commonly requested skin care treatment that will noticeably improve the texture and appearance of skin, even after just one appointment. Most patients seeking microdermabrasion do so to improve the appearance of uneven skin tones, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, superficial age spots, and acne damage. The procedure can be applied to the face, neck, chest, and hands, customized by your clinician to best treat each site.

Generally speaking, microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique involving mechanical exfoliation by a specially designed machine. Typically, microdermabrasion involves the use of tiny crystals to break apart dead skin cells from the uppermost layer of the skin, or epidermis. Once the cells are broken apart, they can be removed to reveal the newer, healthier layer of fresh skin cells below. Microdermabrasion is designed to address common skin concerns including the softening of fine lines and wrinkles, the smoothing of coarse skin, the decreased appearance of scarring, decreased pore size, and a reduction in hyper-pigmentation, also called age spots.

What Can a Facial Do For Your Skin?

Another tried and true beauty treatment to rejuvenate the skin is a facial. When delivered by an experienced and licensed aesthetician, facial treatments can clean, exfoliate, and nourish the skin in a multi-step treatment that promotes a clear complexion. While many patients seek facials to improve the appearance of their acne, pore size, and even oily skin, this very popular procedure can be performed to address a wide range of skin concerns. During your appointment, you will meet with the aesthetician to be evaluated, to consult about your problem areas, to cleanse the skin, to have your skin analyzed, to steam the skin and have a deep exfoliation treatment. Finally, your facial will next include an extraction to remove impurities like blackheads and/or whiteheads from the pores, which is an essential piece of restoring the healthy balance to the face. To wrap up your facial, the aesthetician will massage the face, apply facial masks to target special concerns, and then apply additional products such as toner, serums, moisturizer, and sunscreen as needed.

The facial process can involve many specific steps, but there is no recovery process associated with this procedure. Specific concerns can be addressed as the aesthetician works solely on your skin. Additionally, these treatments can be performed once in a while for a quick boost to your appearance or they can be scheduled regularly to maintain your results and manage specific skin conditions, such as acne.

What Makes a Silk Peel So Effective?

Chemical peels are specifically designed skincare treatments that use chemicals to achieve remarkable results on the face. Despite the name, a SilkPeel is actually more like microdermabrasion in its approach.  SilkPeel combines the surface-based exfoliation component with a deeply penetrating patient-specific solution right onto the skin, somewhat like a chemical peel. These treatments are available only in facilities with medical directors and trained clinicians on staff, so it is not available at your local spa or salon. Consult with a plastic surgeon if you’re interested in a SilkPeel treatment.
Following a Silk Peel treatment, patients tend to find there’s no need to worry about irritated or inflamed skin. Their faces feel smooth, well hydrated, and healthy. Even better, it can deliver immediate results, can be performed quickly, and doesn’t involve any recovery time. This is one of the most advanced procedures available today, offering patients noticeably better skin in less than 30 minutes.

Where Are These Skin Care Treatments Available?

Try out a new skin care treatment to rejuvenate your skin today, whether you’re thinking of microdermabrasion, a facial, or the Silk Peel treatment. Start by contacting American Self Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedics to book your appointment with the Medi-Spa clinicians. For other treatments and surgical procedures, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ruth Hillelson, Director of Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics. Once you’ve noticed the stubborn fat deposits on your body that won’t respond to proper diet and exercise, it’s pretty hard not to notice them. These resistant fat cells can accumulate almost anywhere on the body, but often collect around the hips, midsection, and thighs. When liposuction was developed, it targeted these areas surgically and offered a solution for fit, healthy individuals to enhance their body contour. But liposuction can also result in skin laxity, particularly over time.
Now, thanks to the innovative technology of CoolSculpting, fat deposits don’t even need surgery to be eliminated once and for all and result in no skin laxity.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is one of the newest technologies in body contouring techniques, providing patients with incredible results in a just a short time. It also involves very little recovery time, pain or discomfort, and potential risks, especially in comparison to surgical approaches to fat removal. CoolSculpting can address the bulges, rolls, and other small pockets of fat that have settled in various locations around the body and can’t be solved with a healthy lifestyle and exercise. These spots are often referred to as love handles, muffin tops, pregnancy pooches, and even back fat, among others. They can cause body image problems as well as more serious trouble, like metabolic problems, if they remain unaddressed.

Who Is a Candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting offers the best results to patients who are in good overall physical health and live a healthy lifestyle, complete with a balanced diet and regular exercise. These prospective patients should also be frustrated with specific areas of their body where fat has collected. During a one-on-one consultation, ideal candidates can point out these exact areas that they would like to target. Because CoolSculpting is a procedure with such a short recovery time, it is not necessary that candidates be available to commit to long periods of downtime or to abstain from specific activities.

How Are CoolSculpting Procedures Performed?

The CoolSculpting procedure is performed using a special machine that is positioned at the recovery area. With the patient lying down, the machine locks on to the area, drawing the skin over the fat deposit up and in between two cooling panels. Most patients describe this sensation as feeling like firm pulling, but without pain. With the tissue held tightly between the cooling panels, the CoolSculpting device uses controlled cooling, known as Cryolipolysis, to target fatty areas and encourage the body to remove the cells. Intense cold is delivered to the fatty cells, crystallizing them. Following a CoolSculpting treatment, the body will begin to break these cells down and remove them from the body. This process typically takes two to four months to be completed, but your results will emerge slowly as more and more crystallized fat cells are removed.

What Is It Like to have a CoolSculpting Procedure?

As a first-time patient of CoolSculpting, the process might sound a bit strange at first. However, opting for a CoolSculpting procedure can help you to avoid surgery, long recovery times, painful side effects, and other potential complications. The procedure itself involves unusual sensations, such as the pulling mentioned above and the cooling feeling when the cold is applied. These intense feelings of cold are short-lived, lasting only a few minutes in each treatment area. Most patients of CoolSculpting grow used to the sensations quickly and are able to spend the time during their treatment by relaxing, napping, reading a book, or even working on a laptop. Depending on where your target areas are located, you might even be able to sit up throughout your CoolSculpting session. There is no sedation required for CoolSculpting so you will remain fully conscious.

Many patients need only one visit for an effective CoolSculpting procedure. In other cases, however, patients might require two or more sessions to reach all the targeted areas. Once completed, your treatments should yield an average 20% reduction in the fat layer of your targeted areas. Some areas need extra attention to achieve this 20% reduction, so it’s likely they will want to revisit for treatment in the same area to achieve the patient’s desired result for that body part. Multiple visits have been shown to bring the reduction average of these fat layers closer to 40%, a very drastic change visibly.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from CoolScupting?

Because there is no anesthesia, no incision, and no surgical trauma, the CoolSculpting procedure does not require any recovery at all. It is a completely noninvasive procedure that requires no healing; the only changes made are to the crystallized cells, which the body will naturally break down and flush without any intervention from you. Some patients with sensitive skin make experience some soreness, redness, or minor bruising in the treatment areas from the machine, but all of these side effects are normal and will heal on their own within a few days. There is no need to restrict your activities, take time off from work, or skip out on any travel plans following a CoolSculpting procedure. Putting in the short amount of time for one procedure will reap benefits to your body and improve your fat deposits drastically over the months following it. You don’t need to do anything but keep your CoolSculpting appointment and then go about your daily life.

Is CoolSculpting for You?

If this procedure sounds like the magic answer you’ve been searching for, the best thing to do is consult with a plastic surgeon offering CoolSculpting in his or her clinic. During this consultation, your body will be evaluated with special attention to your areas of concern. You will also discuss the procedure and your expectations for your personal results with your plastic surgeon to help determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment.
