Laser Resurfacing in Richmond, VA

Laser Resurfacing refers to a noninvasive method used to reveal younger, smoother, brighter skin.  The Laser Resurfacing procedure utilizes a concentrated beam of laser light, directed at the skin in rapid pulses.  The laser will dissolve the molecular bonds of the epidermis, allowing the outside layer of skin to be eventually slough away.  The top layer of damaged skin will be eliminated, bringing the underlying layers of skin to the surface.  It will also promote the formation of new collagen, one of the most important building blocks of healthy skin.

Dr. Hillelson uses the Clear+Brilliant Permea Laser, as well as the Sciton Laser, to perform their Laser Resurfacing treatments.  The individual’s skin type and desired level of correction will determine which type of resurfacing treatment needed for optimum results.

The Ideal Candidate for Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing RichmondGood candidates for Laser Resurfacing include both men and women.  Anyone looking to address sun damage and the early signs of aging may find the resurfacing procedure helpful.
As with most other cosmetic treatments, patients should be in generally good health, understand the Laser Resurfacing process, and hold reasonable expectations for the results.  Laser Resurfacing is safe for most all skin types and ethnicities.  During the consultation appointment, the surgeon and aesthetician will decide which laser technique is right for a patient’s personal situation.

The Laser Resurfacing Procedures

The Sciton Laser:

Sciton in Richmond VAThe Scion Laser uses a high frequency laser (destructive) to precisely treat problem areas of the  skin.  Acne scarring, vascular conditions, fine lines, and deep wrinkles can be corrected.  The Scion Laser hand piece will simultaneously cool the skin with each laser pulse, eliminating much of the discomfort associated with the procedure.  A topical anesthetic or a local nerve block may be used before the procedure, as well.

It is not uncommon for patients to see mild swelling, scabbing, and crusting along the treatment areas; these will normally last between 3 and 6 days depending upon the depth of the resurfacing.  The skin will need to remain hydrated during the healing process; Dr. Hillelson will explain the moisturizers and other products that are safe to use at this time.  Patients will feel well enough to return to their normal activates after about eight days.  Makeup should not be worn for the first 10 days after the laser treatment.

The results from a Sciton Laser will be noticeable after about two weeks.  The skin will be smoother and more refreshed, giving a more youthful appearance.

The Clear+Brilliant Permea Laser

Clear+Brilliant VAThis low powered (nondestructive) fractional laser can be used to rejuvenate the skin and smooth areas of dark pigmentation.  The gentle procedure can provide correction for sun damaged tissue, fine lines, wrinkles, rough skin, and large pores.  Immediate results will seen after a treatment with the Clear+Brillant Laser; these will continue to improve over the following three months.

The Clear+Brilliant treatment will take about 20 minutes in the office.  The Laser is not painful, although patients often describe a feeling of warmth during treatment.  A topical anesthetic may be applied prior to treatment to add to the patient’s comfort level.

Downtime after the Clear+Brilliant Laser is minimal.  Initially patients may note minor redness and inflammation, although these will subside over the first several hours.  Makeup can be worn immediately after treatment.

Risks of Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing should be performed by a trained medical professional, such as the staff at Hillelson-Whipple Clinic.  The procedure can be safe, and provide excellent results, although there is always a small chance for complications to occur.  The risks from a Laser Resurfacing treatment include scarring, infection, delayed healing, and areas of hyperpigmentation.
