Fall Skincare Tips for Your Routine

Skincare Tips for Fall

There’s a wealth of information out there on how you should take care of your skin every season. There’s a reason for this. Fall and winter are especially tough on skin, and not taking proper care of it can leave you feeling dry and wrinkled by the end of the season. So here are a few skincare tips to keep in mind from the medical professionals at the Hillelson-Whipple Clinic in Richmond, VA.

1) Cleanse, THEN Moisturize

Always put your moisturizer onto clean skin! Otherwise, you’re swishing around a ton of microscopic bacteria and dirt around your face, making it harder for your moisturizer to penetrate the dermis and do its job. Many individuals with dry skin try to avoid washing it with a cleanser, but this is a mistake. You should always choose a cleanser that is best for your skin type. If your skin is dry, choose something with lots of kinds of butter, milks, and good ingredients for dry skin. If you’re on the oily side, choose an oil-free cleanser to keep your skin looking healthy. Once you’ve washed off that layer of dirt, always moisturize after.

2) Start Using Serum and Eye Cream

A serum is a concentration of various beneficial ingredients that goes under your moisturizer. Adding this to your routine during the fall is vital, as it adds an extra layer of moisture and protection, giving your skin what it needs to make it through the cold months. Eye cream is another important part of skincare. It goes over serum and under your moisturizer. The area around your eyes is sensitive, and doesn’t produce as much sebum (oil) as you get older, which is why it is usually the first place you notice wrinkles.

3) Don’t Forget Sunscreen

You should use sunscreen specifically for your face all year round. You may not feel the hot sun rays as you do in the summer, but that doesn’t mean that the winter sun can’t damage your skin. If you want to do your best to avoid sun spots in the future, use that sunscreen now.

4) Get Enough Sleep

This one is easier said than done, but nothing helps your skin quite as much as getting enough sleep. Eye creams can only do so much to cover up dark circles! When you sleep, your body is actively repairing your skin and circulating blood to the areas that need it, like under your eyes. When you don’t get enough sleep, your circulation isn’t quite the same, meaning your skin problems will continue.

5) Consult a Doctor or Dermatologist

If you’re not sure if you’re using the best skin care products or even caring for your skin correctly in the winter, it’s time to talk to an MD about your skincare routine. They can recommend the best types of products for your skin, as well as any procedures that will alleviate some of your skincare concerns.

Call the Hillelson-Whipple Clinic at 804-290-0060 to speak to a doctor about your skin concerns. We have a number of non-invasive procedures that we offer that can help you get rid of pesky wrinkles, age spots, and loose skin. We can also recommend the best possible skincare products for your skin type, to make sure that you’re using the products you should be.
