Whether you suffered from acne as a teen or in adulthood, it often leads to scarring. Not everyone with acne will experience acne scars. It is more common in individuals who have inflammatory acne (which penetrates deeper in the skin). The good news is there are some procedures that are very effective in treating scarring. Some treatments or combinations of treatments are more effective for certain types of scars.
Microneedling
Microneedling, which is also known as collagen induction therapy, is commonly used to improve tone and texture, reduce surface scarring (such as acne scars) and treat fine wrinkles. This treatment encourages your body to make more collagen. To perform this procedure, a sterile, handheld needle-studded roller is moved across the depressed acne scars. This punctures your skin. As your skin heals, it produces collagen.
Chemical Peels
The dermis is made up of several layers. Underneath the top surface of your skin is a fresh new layer and a chemical peel is the fastest way to it. Chemical peels help remove dull surface cells, improve fine lines, diminish acne scars and discoloration. A consultation with a doctor can determine which peel is best to help soften the scars from acne.
Resurfacing Procedures
When a patient wants to diminish the appearance of widespread acne scarring, a resurfacing procedure can be very effective. Resurfacing removes layers of skin, which allows the body to produce new skin cells. Resulting in the surface feeling and looking more smooth.
Fillers
The use of fillers to safely and effectively plump depressed acne scars is a very effective non-surgical method to improve appearance. Many fillers give temporary results, which last between 6 and 18 months. Some fillers are more permanent.
Skin tightening
The use of a technology called radiofrequency to tighten the skin is known to be effective. As the skin tightens, depressed acne scars become less noticeable resulting in a more even look.
Safe and effective treatments are available for acne scars, but first a consultation is needed. During the consultation the best options for a treatment plan for your type of acne scars will be discussed. The type of treatment will be based upon the type of scarring so that maximum benefits may be achieved. Everyone has individual goals for how they want their skin to appear once treatments are completed. The experience and attention you’ll receive at Hillelson-Whipple Clinic will ensure you’re receiving the best treatment options for all of your skin care needs.
